History of an itinerant
exhibition
Federica Berner lives in the Brera area, where
she undertook her professional course.
Drawing on her fascination for the world that developed around
the Accademia of Belle Arti, on the many galleries, bars and
restaurants attended by the artists that disseminated the city’s
pictorial traditions, she has gathered their portraits on thin
cloths. These cloths describe the artists in a somehow unreal
and impalpable way, however retaining their substance and
integrity.
It’s more about a work of synthesis than a series of
representations. Her intention is to give life to a movement
rather than to any specific character.
The biography of this world as a whole, taken from her own and
her friends’ memories, has been Berner’s way to pay homage to
the life of Brera.
The “Maestri di Brera” installation was hosted initially in
Milan, in the “Cortile della Seta” of the Commercio and
Industria Bank, then in New York, within the Artemide, Bisazza
and Natuzzi showrooms, then in the home of Carducci in
Valdicastello Carducci.
Ultimately, the installation served as an accompaniment, vessel
and background to the works of 120 Lombard artists that were
presented at the “Masters of Brera” exhibition that took place
in Shanghai in the prestigious Liu Hai-su Modern Art Museum. The
exhibition was supported by the Region of Lombardy, the Lombard
Chambers of Commerce, the Promos, the Unioncamere Lombardia,
Italianlink and Mob and received patronage from Fiera Milano
International, Accademia of Belle Arti of Brera-Milan, Italia
Cina Foundation and Enjoy Miart.

Sails
and boats, profiles and stories of the sea
Pisa: city of sea, knowledge and
know how.
Exhibition point: Navicelli s.p.a
“Onda 2008” Building - Via Darsena 3 - 56121 - Pisa
25th June-25th July 2009
The exhibition draws inspiration from the people who dedicate
their lives to the sea, to pleasure boating and to sails.
The wind blowing on the sails of a boat that was traveling
through Pisa allowed Galileo to understand the laws of free fall
and enlightened him with the theories of relativity.
Wind, sails, sea and science intertwined in a path that
originates from the Marine Republic and terminates at the Normal
School.
Paintings, photos, installations of sails and objects all
associated to the sea: art becomes a vehicle of communication,
an element of union between the world of production and “the
artist” that find themselves interacting to narrate the
traditions and transformations of the land that from Pisa goes,
along the Arno River to the sea and, through the Mediceo dei
Navicelli Canal, to the port of Livorno.
The canvas, the exhibition’s “Fil Rouge”: since the times of the
Marine Republics, this has been the primary textile fibre in use
for the production of ropes and fishing nets.
In its being the support for the realization of the works of art
and sails, it represents the sign of marine tradition.
Work presented:
Paintings of Federica Berner: 20 big acrylic paintings (160´105)
on canvas and a variety of oil paintings on canvas created
especially for the exhibition during the 2009 autumn/winter
season.
People of the sea, photos and stories printed on canvas paper.
Canvas sails, dyed with natural colours
The sails of Mascalzone Latino, World Cup Farr 40.
